How to Add Android Auto and CarPlay to Your HyundaiAndroid Auto and Apple CarPlay

Starting in 2015, Hyundai integrating Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its vehicles. Since then, the ability to install both systems has been enabled in a number of models. Currently, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available in select versions of the 2017 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport, the 2016 Tucson, the 2016 Genesis, and the 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT, among other models.

There are many more, and Hyundai continues to integrate both systems into new vehicles. For a full listing of compatible vehicles, check the MyHyundai owner’s site. Many models will have the functionality in the near future, as well.

What Is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay?

Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integrate the driver’s Android or Apple smartphone into the Hyundai’s touchscreen. This makes it easy to access smartphone data – like text messages, incoming phone calls, contacts and stored music – via the touchscreen.

With both systems, your text messages and incoming calls are displayed on the Hyundai’s LCD screen. Plus, both systems also integrate a number of favorite apps like iHeartRadio and Spotify into the touchscreen, as well as Google or Apple navigation and hands-free voice commands (Google Voice or Siri). Downloading and Installing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Fortunately, downloading and installing Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is a fairly easy process that requires just basic computer knowledge, a USB drive with at least 2GB of available space, and a computer with web access. To download the software, visit the MyHyundai owner’s site. After logging in, you will navigate to the download button in the top navigation bar. Then, you can choose to download Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Follow the prompts to download the software. The download may take up to a couple of hours, depending on your connection speed, so you may prefer to download overnight or during afternoon activities.

Once the download is complete, you should open the file and transfer it to the USB drive.  After the Android Auto or Apple CarPlay files have been added to the USB, you can install them in your Hyundai vehicle.

To install, insert the USB drive in the Hyundai’s USB port. Then choose the radio’s SETUP button. Then choose the SYSTEM INFO icon on the Hyundai touchscreen. After choosing SYSTEM INFO, an UPDATE button will appear. Click UPDATE to begin the installation. Installation requires your vehicle’s engine to be turned on, and the process takes up to an hour. So park your vehicle in a well-ventilated area, while the process takes place.

During installation, do not remove the USB drive from the port and ensure the vehicle’s engine is running. Removing the drive or turning off the engine during the installation can disrupt installation. Connecting Your Smartphone to the Hyundai Display

Finally, you can connect your smartphone to the screen. To do this, you will connect your Android or Apple smartphone to the USB port, using your phone’s charging cable. Then, with either CarPlay or Android Auto, you need to follow the prompts on your phone’s screen.
